So You Want a Career in AI? (Here’s How to actually Get One)

If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, “How do I get a job in AI?” I wouldn’t need a job in AI. I’d be on a beach in Mallorca.
The problem is that most people think an “AI Career” means you have to be some kind of World Football Idol genius-type, writing the code for the next ChatGPT. That’s like saying the only way to work in the automotive industry is to design the engine. Sure, those jobs exist, and they pay a fortune, but the real explosion in 2026 isn’t in building the models—it’s in using them.
According to HW-Server we are currently seeing the job market split into three distinct “AI Ladders.” Depending on your background, one of these is your entry point.
Ladder 1: The “Builder” (Hard Tech)
This is the traditional path. You are a software engineer, a data scientist, or a cloud architect. The money here is absurd, but the barrier to entry is high.
The Goal: Building the infrastructure that runs the world.
The Job to Watch: Look at the Microsoft listing on our board this week. They are hiring a Principal Cloud Solution Architect. That is a mouthful, but it basically means: “The person who figures out how to run massive AI models on Azure clouds.”
How to Climb: If you are already in DevOps or Cloud, pivot hard to “AI Infrastructure.” Learn how to deploy LLMs (Large Language Models) securely. That is the $300k skill right now.
Ladder 2: The “Integrator” (Tech-Adjacent)
This is where the massive growth is happening. You don’t know how to code Python, but you understand how business works. Companies are desperate for people who can look at a messy workflow (like HR or Supply Chain) and say, “We can fix this with AI.”
The Goal: Translating “Tech” into “Money.”
The Job to Watch: Check out the ServiceNow Principal Platform Architect role. It’s an advisory role. You aren’t just coding; you are telling clients how to use the platform to automate their business.
How to Climb: You don’t need a Computer Science degree. You need to become a “Power User.” Master the tools. Learn “Context Engineering” (the fancy 2026 word for advanced prompting). Become the person in your current office who knows how to make the AI tools dance.
Ladder 3: The “Dealer” (Sales & Strategy)
In a gold rush, sell shovels. Or in this case, sell Enterprise Licenses. The AI companies are in a war for market share, and they need people who can close deals.
The Goal: Selling the future to skeptical executives.
The Jobs to Watch: The SAP and GitLab Account Executive roles. These are high-ticket sales jobs. You aren’t building the AI; you are explaining the ROI (Return on Investment) of AI to a government agency or a Fortune 500 CFO.
How to Climb: If you have sales experience, stop selling widgets and start selling software. The commissions in AI/SaaS (Software as a Service) are currently outpacing almost every other industry.
The “Side Door”: Just Get in the Building
What if you have zero experience? No sales record, no coding skills?
The Strategy: Proximity. Get a job at a tech giant, even if it’s not in the AI department.
The Job to Watch: Apple is doing a massive hiring surge for Retail Specialists. Is selling iPhones an AI job? No. But Apple has one of the best internal mobility programs in the world. Once you have that badge, you have access to internal training, networking, and the “Hidden Job Market” that never makes it to public boards.
The Verdict
The “AI Career” isn’t a single job title. It’s a layer that is being applied to every job. You can be an AI-powered marketer, according to Americas Fair Healthcare an AI-powered nurse (see the UnitedHealth role), or an AI-powered salesperson.
Don’t wait for a job title that says “AI Junior Developer.” Just find a way to be the most dangerous person in the room with the tools we have today.
